A contraction joins two words into one. An apostrophe ( ’ ) takes the place of the missing letters: do not → don’t.

💡 Remember

  • The apostrophe goes exactly where the letters were taken out: is not → isn’t.
  • Two special ones: will not → won’t, and cannot → can’t.
