Describing Words
Adjectives, comparatives and superlatives
Adjectives describe nouns. We use comparatives (-er) to compare two things and superlatives (-est) to compare three or more.

Is each adjective about colour, shape or size? Write it in the right column.

💡 How to compare
- Short words: add -er / -est. fast → faster → fastest
- Ends in e: add -r / -st. wide → wider → widest
- One vowel + one consonant: double it. big → bigger → biggest
- Ends in y: change to -ier / -iest. happy → happier → happiest
- Long words: use more / most. beautiful → more beautiful → most beautiful
Part BCompare two
Write the comparative form of the word in brackets.
- The elephant is than the dog. (heavy)
- The horse is than the snail. (fast)
- The coconut tree is than the flower. (tall)
- The mouse is than the cat. (small)
- Summer is than winter. (hot)
- A watermelon is than a lemon. (big)
- The lion is than the sheep. (strong)
- This storybook is than that one. (interesting)
Part CThe best of all
Write the superlative form of the word in brackets. Remember "the".
- The blue whale is animal in the world. (big)
- The cheetah is animal on land. (fast)
- The giraffe is animal in the zoo. (tall)
- Mount Everest is mountain on Earth. (high)
- Priya is girl in our class today. (happy)
- This is rainbow I have ever seen. (beautiful)
